At first glance, Egyptological genre research presents itself as a conglomerate of contradictory research perspectives. Theoretical considerations of the term “genre” as well as practical studies are based on either a narrow or a broad understanding of literature, diachronic studies stand alongside ones that only consider texts from selected periods, and text-immanent methods compete with approaches, in which the definition of genre is based on extratextual factors. This impression of disparity within Egyptological genre research is relativised after intensive study of the various thinking models. In the course of the following paper, similarities between these models will be discussed in light of a method developed in the field of literary studies and points of contact will be established. The systematisation of approaches aims to develop a complex genre term that can be employed as a basis for future research.
