Wissen von der Zukunft ist für das Alltagsleben genauso relevant wie für politische Entscheidungen. Allerdings handelt es sich um einen sehr spezifischen Typus von Wissen, denn Zukunft ist als Gegenstand abwesend und als Zeitform immer nur im Kommen.
Zukünfte sind streng genommen nur im Plural zu fassen. Sie erscheinen in unterschiedlichen Sprach- und Denkfiguren, werden hergestellt durch verschiedene Kulturtechniken und soziale Praktiken, geformt durch Narrative und Gattungen. Zudem bilden unterschiedliche wissenschaftliche Disziplinen ganz unterschiedliche Prognose-Kulturen aus. Angesichts der Vielfalt und Heterogenität des Zukunftswissens verspricht ein kulturwissenschaftlicher Zugriff differenzierte und neuartige Erkenntnisse. Die zahlreichen Beiträge des Bandes eröffnen anhand von Lemmata wie »Ahnung«, »Suspense«, »Mantik«, »Computersimulation«, »Prophet«, »Posthumanismus« oder »Nanotechnologie« ein historisches und interdisziplinäres Panorama verschiedenartiger Futurologien.
