The 'marvellous' in its complexity and diversity as well as its controversially discussed variants is the central object of investigation in this first interdisciplinary anthology on dimensions of the marvellous in art and culture. For thousands of years, the dazzling phenomenon of the 'marvellous' has fascinated and polarized - from the biblical belief in miracles to Hieronymus Bosch's bizarre visual worlds to fictionally imagined science fiction scenarios. In this volume, the marvellous is examined as an aesthetic-artistic phenomenon in literature, theatre, film and the visual arts as well as an overall cultural phenomenon under religious and linguistic, historical, sociological and (para-)psychological perspectives.
