Jakob Gehlen untersucht Goethes nachitalienisches Schreibprojekt, das sich erstmals explizit in eine Gattungstradition stellt. Es ist dabei nicht mehr auf Übertragung (translatio) oder wetteifernde Nachahmung (aemulatio) angelegt, vielmehr nimmt es selbstbewusst, spielerisch und souverän den grenzenlosen Text-Fundus Rom für sich ein. Diese captio ist in ihrer Imperialität römisch: Sie greift gezielt Fremdes als Eigenes auf und ist zugleich unendlich integrativ. Die Römischen Elegien sind kein Beispiel für die Monumentalisierung der Antike, sondern für lebendige Metamorphose. Im erneuernden Verfügen über antike und moderne Textschichten, in der renovatio Roms, liegt dabei auch ein Gründungsmoment der weltweiten Autorität Goethes.
With the Roman Elegies, Goethe explicitly resorts for the first time to a traditional genre, the Augustan love elegy. But of what use are genres, antiquity and Rome in 1800? The cycle of poems engulfs the infinite imaginary and textual space of Rome—and this in a novel and distinctly ‘Roman’ way. Goethe establishes a form of writing that is not, as before, based on translation or competitive imitation, but rather makes confident, playful and skillful use of the boundless textual fundus (captio). In this renewing mastery of antique and modern text strata, in this renovatio of Rome, lies a founding moment of the worldwide authority of Goethe.

Jakob Gehlen war als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München in der Neueren deutschen Literaturwissenschaft, der Klassischen Philologie und der Deutschdidaktik tätig. Seine Promotion (summa cum laude) entstand im Rahmen der Graduate School Language and Literature an der LMU. Er war Visiting Scholar an der NYU in New York und Promotionsstipendiat am Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung in Berlin. Derzeit ist er Lehrer für die Fächer Deutsch und Latein am Pestalozzi-Gymnasium in München.
