Die vorliegende Forschung definiert die Literatur der Renaissance neu: Die Bedeutung der aristotelischen Poetik wird zurückgestuft zugunsten innovativer – erstaunlicher – literarischer Ansätze.
Das seit langem geltende Paradigma, die italienische Renaissance würde von der klassisch-aristotelischen Literaturtheorie dominiert, wird mit der vorliegenden Forschung maßgeblich ausdifferenziert. Anhand der Analyse des Staunens – ein Begriff, den Aristoteles und Platon an den Anfang des wissenschaftlichen und metaphysischen Denkens stellten und der sich in der italienischen Renaissance zu einem zentralen Konstitutions- und Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Literatur wandelte – wird gezeigt, dass Momente der Neuheit und der Überraschung, ja der erstaunlichen innovatio auf allen Ebenen, die Literatur der Renaissance entscheidend prägten.

“M’illumino/d’immenso” – “I’m lit/with immensity” is Geoffrey Brock’s translation of Giuseppe Ungaretti’s poem Mattina. In the poem’s minimalism, Ungaretti points to the maximal: the richness of poetry’s expressive possibilities and the power of thinking in literature.

In Niemand zu Gast? Hospitalität im Werk Franz Kafkas wird eine in Kafkas Literatur vorzufindende kommunikationstheoretische Umdeutung der Erkenntnistheorie Immanuel Kants nachgewiesen. Für diese Umdeutung ist wesentlich, dass Kafka die von Kant in seiner Argumentation gegen eine mögliche Gegenwart von Geistern hervorgehobene Unterscheidung zwischen permeablen und undurchdringlichen materiellen Substanzen verwirft. Kafka ist sich mehr als bewusst darüber, dass das von Kant als Krankheit verachtete Geistersehen für das Verfassen eines Briefes sowie für jegliche Kommunikation mit nicht körperlich anwesenden Kommunikationspartnern notwendig ist. Im Gegensatz zu Kant setzt er sich mit der Existenz von Zeichen und Medien in ihrer Wirkung auf den Menschen auseinander. Er inszeniert sie als Besucher, die seine Protagonisten ansprechen, mit ihnen spazieren gehen, auf den Türschwellen ihrer Hauseingänge stehen oder als erwartete, wenn auch gespenstige Gäste in ihre Zimmer eintreten.

Figures of Excess in Seventeenth-Century European Art and German Literature
What is the Baroque? Where did it come from and where did it go? Why do we have to ask these questions? Because art historians seem largely satisfied with their answers and most scholars of German literature are not satisfied, yet have stopped asking.This book discerns in the Baroque an aesthetic phenomenon that crosses both media and national boundaries in its celebration of excess and its disintegration of system, unity, and identity. The compositional principles and theoretical implications of the Baroque, as it first arose in Italian art, find expression in German poetics, drama, poetry, and narrative – expression accessible only through resolute close reading. Readings of Bernini, Borromini, Velázquez, Rubens, Fracanzano, and de Hooch precipitate readings of Opitz, Gryphius, Fleming, Zesen, Hoffmannswaldau, and Grimmelshausen, demonstrating that seventeenth-century German literature both is Baroque and confirms what the Baroque is.
