The communication of a specific content, either through a visual or linguistic medium, is determined by the particular nature and inherent laws of the medium concerned. Consequently the transmission of content is influenced by the medial form of communication. For the research of historico-cultural phenomena in the field of Classical Studies this means that we should not concentrate solely on understanding the content, but should also take the medial form into consideration for a more comprehensive interpretation of a particular source. This paper discusses both the necessity of a media theory-based approach as well as the resulting consequences of using such an approach on our methodical procedure.
